“A Christmas Carol”
We had a full house for last night’s program! Duffy Hudson returned for an emotional performance of the Charles Dickens classic, “A Christmas Carol.” One of the ghost scenes even brought the college’s evening administrator in to see what was happening!
Many of you will remember Duffy’s previous Taft College performances as Edgar Allan Poe, Albert Einstein, and Hans Christian Andersen. A brilliant performer, Duffy always holds the audience’s attention.
“A Christmas Carol” was cosponsored by Friends of Taft College Library and Westside Friends of the Library.
Program – This Thursday Evening!
Reminder: Free Christmas Program!

Two FOTCL Events Next Week!
Folks, remember that our regular monthly meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 13, 3:30-4:30 p.m. at TC Library.
Also, please be sure to join us for our special program Viva Panama! Thursday, September 15, 7:00-8:00 p.m. in the Cougar Room (beside the library). This free event is open to the public.
Viva Panama!
Take a free tour of the country of Panama with the Friends of Taft College Library (FOTCL)! Your tour guide will be Dr. Mimi Collins, who lived in the Panama Canal Zone and has visited Panama frequently, most recently in February of this year. The tour will take place Thursday, September 15, 7-8PM in the Taft College Cougar Room (TC Library entrance).
Since 1513, when the Spanish conquistador Balboa became the first European to see the Pacific Ocean from the Americas, this narrow isthmus has served as a busy corridor. The first “transcontinental” railway was built across the isthmus in the early 1850s to serve the California Gold Rush. The canal, opened in August 1915, operated virtually unchanged for nearly 100 years.
But there is much more to Panama than that narrow corridor! Come with us to see modern cities, miles of open beaches, lush mountains, and a diversity of people and nature that is unique and fascinating!
To join this free “armchair” tour, simply come to Taft College Library Thursday evening, September 15, 7-8PM.
Coming Up in September
The days are getting shorter, and local kids are returning to school Monday. It must be fall!
Friends of Taft College Library are “returning to school,” too. Our regular “second Tuesday” meeting will be September 13, 3:30-4:30 p.m., at TC Library. Coffee and cookies will be available for your afternoon pick-me-up! Please feel free to bring guests.
PROGRAM: Thursday evening, September 15, 7-9PM, Dr. Mimi Collins will present a program on the country of Panama. “Viva Panama!” will be sponsored by FOTCL and open to the public.
Good-bye, Don
We said our final good-byes to Don Gillaspie today. Here he is on May 23, presenting his program “The Evolution of Taft College” to the Friends of Taft College Library at West Kern Oil Museum. You football folks would have loved the program. Don was a treasure; his passing was a great loss to the Taft community.
Don’s Service Friday
from Taft Chamber on Facebook:
Hello, everyone. For those of you who would like to bring any kind of food for Don Gillaspie’s service, you can drop it off at the First Baptist Church at 9:00 AM on Friday morning. His service will be at the Westside Believers Church at 10:00 AM. If you have anymore questions, contact Sherry Reed Coulter at 745-4904.
Don Gillaspie Passes
Folks, we’ve lost a wonderful friend. Don was one of our Directors. He was the guest speaker at our May 23 Annual Luncheon, offering a wonderful video program he had produced. Don had also produced a video of the Book Parade when the new Taft College Library was opened in July 2008, as well as countless other videos of community events. He was treasured and will be deeply missed.
